Casa das Pedras Grandes is an old Portuguese dwelling built with local stone. It has been renovated and modernized, mixing traditional crafts and design, with modern materials and technology to make a comfortable and attractive home. For the comfort of our "off season" guests we have wood fired central heating, with radiators in all rooms. The guest accommodation comprises of a large ground floor double bedroom, with en-suite and a large first floor double bedroom, with balcony and private bathroom. There is also a comfortable guest lounge and dining area. Broadband internet access is available, via our guest Laptop computer and there is a dedicated Portuguese mobile phone.
Located in a small hamlet, in the beautiful rural setting of the Serra da Lousa, Central Portugal. It is ideal for those that want to get away and experience some of the true character and beauty that this country has to offer. The surrounding countryside is a mixture of pine and scented eucalyptus forests, which cover the hills and mountains in a carpet of green. Rivers wind through the valleys which provide swimming from the Praia fluvial (river beaches)in the summer, fishing and other water sports. Attractive villages and towns enable visitors to experience rural Portuguese life and the local cuisine. There are plenty of opportunities to exercise, both on foot and bicycle along the numerous cross country tracks, or you can relax in the private court yard by the pool.

Notes: We have two good size, comfortable double rooms.
The first floor bedroom has a balcony overlooking the enclosed courtyard and swimming pool. A table and chairs are provided to enjoy the wonderful views of wooded hillsides and some incredible sunsets during the summer. It has it's own private bathroom, including bath and shower just outside the room. This bedroom opens out into a short curtained landing which leads to the guest lounge and dining area. There is also a portable radio cd player and hairdryer for your use.
The ground floor bedroom has an en-suite shower room and enjoys views of the courtyard, small swimming pool and the wooded ridges that surround the house. There is a table and chairs for a private morning coffee or tea and those all important post cards. The bedroom is also equipped with a single "occasional" bed, suitable for a child. A radio cd player is provided for your use along with a hairdryer. This room opens out into the main dining area and is very convenient for the courtyard.
We have facilities for 4 guests, but can provide a single "occasional" bed, for a child to sleep with their parents in the ground floor bedroom for a small supplement. Please e-mail with your enquiries.
The guest lounge is available for you to relax in after a hard day's exploring. There is a TV with dvd, English freeview satellite channels, a fridge for that cold glass of wine or beer and tea and coffee making facilities. You can sit with a drink and enjoy the scenery, read one of the tourist information books or Portuguese living guides, or browse the Guest Information pack. This includes local maps, suggestions for eating out, a selection of tourist information on places to visit and a list of DVDs for a quiet evening in.
A continental style breakfast of, cereals, yoghurts ,fruit, fresh bread and rolls, meats, cheeses, tea or filter coffee and fruit juice is offered.
Other areas which are available for your use are the enclosed and private courtyard with small swimming pool and BBQ area. (The pool is 1.44m/4'9" deep and unfortunately not suitable for young children) Sun loungers are available and towels for use in the courtyard can be provided.
A Laptop computer is available for our guests to use, whether it be for property hunting or information to plan days out, checking your e-mails or for travel arrangements. There is also a Portuguese pay as you go mobile phone, to help keep costs down when ringing Portuguese mobile or landline numbers.
We have detailed maps of the local area and beyond, to help plan days out and will happily pass on any local knowledge, that may be helpful.
If guests prefer not to drive, we can provide transport in our 5 seater combi van, for days or evenings out and to and from the local train station or airports. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
Laundry facilities are offered for a small charge, and an iron and ironing board is available for guest use.

Location Details
A five minute drive to the NW is the village of Serpins, which has a few bars, small local supermarket and post office. There is a railway station with regular trains to Coimbra via Lousa and Miranda do Corvo. The line winds it's way through beautiful countryside and villages all the way to Coimbra, and takes about an hour.
Half an hour's drive from Casa das Pedras Grandes is Coimbra, Portugal's third largest city and once it's capital. Home to Portugal's oldest and most prestigious university and Baroque library, it is sited on the hillside above the Rio Mondego. There is plenty to see and do in Coimbra, from visiting its many beautiful buildings, wandering around the narrow cobbled streets in the old part of the city. to shopping in its modern indoor shopping centres. There are bars, cafes and restaurants to cater for every taste and pocket. Coimbra has the feeling of a large town and in common with the rest of this region of Portugal, makes it's visitors feel safe and welcome.
Lousa, the nearest town, is a 15 minute drive to the SW and has all the facilities you would expect, including restaurants, bars, shops, five good size supermarkets, banks and medical centre etc.
The Silver Coast is around an hour away by car. There are many places of interest and historical sites within easy reach.
Porto airport is approximately two hours to the north by road. To the south Lisbon is two and a half hours and the Algarve around five. All have good road and rail links. The train service is punctual, clean and reasonably inexpensive. A journey to Porto airport takes about 3 hours.
